Rug Workshop at Creative Growth

I have been teaching and facilitating the artists at The Creative Growth Art Center since 2002. Most of those years have been with the Rug Department. There are around 2o artists that make their own rugs at Creative Growth. The Rug Workshop is often the place where visitors come first during their tours of the C.G. studio and gallery. It looks and sounds very exciting with all of the chatter and click of the tools and artisans.

The Rug Workshop was started many years ago (about 30 years!) and is still going strong. We only use in-house designs and each rug is one of a kind. At times we make small editions, yet each rug comes out unique.

Since the Rug Workshop's inception, we have cataloged over 800 rugs. While I have been teaching Hooked Rug making at CG, the rugs have been shown at the Oakland Airport, Pulse Miami Art Fair, The Moss Design Center in NY, NY,  the West Coast Craft Fair in San Francisco, CA. and were featured in Oprah's O Magazine and Paper Magazine.

One of my own traditionally Hooked Rugs, (done with woolen strips of fabric), hangs in the collection of the American Embassy in Maddagassgar (shown above). I learned how to use the much more traditionally used cut strips of woollen fabric and hook on a sabatical in Scottland. Creative Growth and the Ospital Oddessey Grant, given to staff for sabaticals, awarded me the time and funds to find a new skill and bring it home to others.
